What changed for 2026

The enhanced premium tax credits that lowered ACA premiums through 2025 expired at the end of that year. For 2026, many middle-income households no longer qualify for a subsidy and pay the full price on the exchange, which makes comparing private and off-exchange options more important than ever. A licensed agent checks both for you, free.

What "private" (off-exchange) health insurance means

Private health insurance simply means a plan you buy directly through a licensed agent or carrier rather than through the government marketplace. Many of these plans are major medical coverage from the same national carriers, just sold off-exchange.

The catch with off-exchange plans is that they are not eligible for ACA subsidies. That is exactly why they can be a strong option in 2026 for people who no longer qualify for a subsidy anyway: you are comparing full-price plans either way, and an agent can often find a better fit off-exchange.

Why private plans matter more in 2026

With the enhanced tax credits expired, a large group of middle-income households now pays full price on the exchange for the first time. If you are in that group, there is no subsidy advantage to staying on-exchange, and a private plan may offer a better network, lower premium, or benefits that fit you better.

A licensed agent compares your on-exchange and off-exchange options side by side so you can see the real trade-offs instead of assuming the marketplace is your only choice.

What a licensed agent compares for you

There is no single "best" plan, only the best plan for your budget, doctors, and prescriptions. An agent does the legwork at no cost to you.

  • Monthly premium and deductible trade-offs
  • Whether your doctors and hospitals are in-network
  • Prescription drug coverage for the medications you take
  • ACA plans too, in case a subsidy still helps you

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a plan you buy directly through a licensed agent or carrier rather than through the government marketplace. Many are major medical plans from national carriers, sold off-exchange. They are not eligible for ACA subsidies.
It depends. If you qualify for a subsidy, an on-exchange ACA plan may be cheaper. If you do not qualify (which is more common in 2026), a private plan may offer better value. A licensed agent compares both for free.
Availability depends on the plan type. Some private plans can be purchased outside Open Enrollment, while ACA plans generally require Open Enrollment or a Special Enrollment Period. A licensed agent will tell you your fastest legitimate path to coverage.
